Lee Dong Wook reveals his curiosity and his observations of live organisms that are totally unaffected by the environment outside the microcosm they inhabit. His imaginative renditions of miniature human figures are derived from his hobby of collecting everything from toys to glass bottles, cans, plastic objects, etc. and his desire to gather, collect and classify them. His latest exhibitions titled Inbreeding (2003) and Mouthbreeder (2004) portrayed the characteristics of contemporary human society's utter hopelessness and showed his fascination for the organisms that live within restricted spaces, such as goldfish and caged birds. Lee Dongwook appears to investigate the paradox of how to survive in our civilization's compromised system and social hypertensions. (Miyoung von Platen)
이동욱의 작품은 소우주 밖의 환경에 그다지 영향을 받지 않고 살아가는 유기체에 대한 그의 호기심과 관찰력을 보여주고 있다. 나체의 미니어쳐 인물형상을 환상적으로 연출한 그의 작품은 장난감에서부터 유리병, 깡통, 플라스틱에 이르는 모든 것을 수집하고 분류하는 그의 취미에서 비롯되었다. 그는 또한 어항안의 금붕어나 새장 안의 새들 같은 제한된 공간안에 살고 있는 생물체에 매료되어 이를 인간사회에 대한 비유로 적용시킨다. 『Inbreeding (근친교배)』과 『Moutbreeder (입 안에서 알이나 새끼를 기르는 관상용 열대어)』라는 제목의 그의 최근 전시회들은 현대 인간 사회에서 생길 수 있는 극도로 절망적인 상황을 극사실적이면서도 초현실주의적인 환영과 같은 방법으로 표현하였다. 이동욱은 인간문명의 타협화된 체계와 극도의 사회적 긴장상태에서 살아남는 법에 대한 역설을 탐색하고 있는 듯이 보인다.
