I have always been drawn to old, worn-out objects and used them as the subject matters of my artworks. This old, worn-out-ness tells us the lapse of time as well as the transience of life. The fleeting moment of time highlights the flashy splendor of the world and yet, paradoxically, shows its emptiness. My works express this emptiness in transparent constructs. Transparency embodies not only the temporal transience but also spatial emptiness. Moreover, as it enables us to see through the inside and to feel the inner space overlapping with the outer space, it provides a different sense of spatiality along with our viewing angles. Transparency has become the most significant concept as well as material of my works.
As an
artist, I have often questioned my self what beauty is. At the moment, I would
like to conclude that beauty comes from seeing itself, rather than the object
to be seen. My works can be enjoyed when one moves around the objects. Their
transparency and inner emptiness allow one to truly experience what seeing is.
나는 항상 닳고 오래된 사물에 관심을 가져왔고 이를 내 작업의 주제로 삼아왔다. 오래되어 닳아빠진 사물들은 삶의 유한성과 시간의 격차를 말해준다. 덧없이 흘러가는 순간순간의 시간들은 세상의 화려함을 보여주기도 하지만 역설적으로 그것의 허무함을 드러내기도 한다. 나는 이러한 공허감을 투명한 구조물을 통해 표현한다. 투명한 필름은 일시적인 존재감과 더불어 공간적인 비어있음을 보여준다. 또한 이는 안을 꿰뚫어 볼 수 있게 하고 내적공간을 느끼게 해주기 때문에 보는 각도에 따라 다른 공간감을 부여한다. 투명한 필름은 내 작업에 있어서 가장 중요한 개념이자 재료가 되었다.
작가로서 나는 종종 미(美)란 무엇인가 되묻곤 한다. 지금의 나는 아름다움이란 보여지는 사물이 아닌 보는 행위 자체에서 비롯되는 것이라 결론을 내린다. 내 작품들은 그 주위를 움직이며 바라볼때 비로소 즐길 수 있다. 대상의 투명함과 내부의 비어있음이 관객으로 하여금 보는 것이란 무엇인가에 대해 진실한 경험을 할 수 있도록 도와줄 것이다.
