The tattoo, visible figure which is carved upon our
body, let people think about invisible sphere that lies beyond the figure
itself. Through these works Kim presents an underlying question concerning the
‘social tattoo’ that exists as an invisible figure. His social tattoo works are
mainly about experiences and creations on a cultural level by transforming,
adapting, and mixing different elements of culture.
Kim Joon takes a photo of a model and compounds layers of different computer graphics on top of the original photograph. He then uses various icons like that of fashion, sports, power, and consumer culture to create identical patterns that will be carved into the skin as a tattoo image that in turn become a social text. He inscribes power politics and monopoly capital such as Samsung and the Woori party. He also touches on the group mentality that exists in areas like the “Red Devils” or the Korean Marines. He also displays the global consumer culture through brands like BMW or Harley Davidson and brands of multinational companies such as Gucci, Starbucks and Adidas. His works that turn invisible social tattoos into visible forms is in a sense a meta-tattoo.
문신은 인체에 시각 이미지를 각인하는 행위이다. 이러한 문신은 몸에 새겨지는 눈에 보이는 문신 뿐 만이 아니라 비물질적인 형태로도 존재한다. 이러한 현상은 개인적 기호나 취미 차원의 사적이고 은밀한 영역으로 치부되어 왔던 문신의 의미를 사회문화적 영역으로 확대하려는 김준의 작업을 통해서 문화적 해석의 지평을 넓혀주고 있다.
김준은 촬영된 모델에 컴퓨터 그래픽으로 스킨을 덧입힌다. 이때 패션, 스포츠, 권력, 집단 등의 다양한 아이콘들이 동일한 패턴으로 인체에 각인되며 문신이미지들은 사회적 텍스트들로 드러난다. 김준은 상품 브랜드에서 집단주의 아이콘에 이르기까지 '우리'라는 집단화된 코드의 사회적 실체들을 적나라하게 드러낸다. 예를 들어 그는 우리당이나 삼성과 같은 정치권력과 독점자본, 붉은 악마나 해병대와 같은 한국사회 특유의 집단문화와 병리적 현상들, BMW나 할리 데이비슨과 같은 글로벌한 소비문화의 도상들, 구찌나 스타벅스, 아디다스와 같은 다국적 기업의 브랜드, 예수나 지미 핸드릭스와 같은 영웅적 인물들을 문신으로 새겨넣는다. 그의 작업은 비가시적인 형태로 존재하는 사회적 문신(Social Tattoo)을 가시적 실체로 드러내는 일종의 메타 문신인 셈이다.
