I have
examined some representative western fairy tales for my new activity; for
example, Cinderella, Snow White, Rapunzel, Beauty and the Beast and so on. What
I found in them is there are definite social classes in these stories, and all
of them contain tacit messages that the weak should obey the order designed by
the strong in order to enjoy happiness. This point corresponds to the
historical fact that the powerful western countries intended to strengthen and
solidify their regime in the conquered countries by indoctrinating their
governing ideology to those whom they ruled. My work is the reinterpretation of
these notions hidden in the western fairy tales.
전통적으로
서구세계의 동양에 대한 역사적, 문화적 편견은 교육이나 그 밖의 사회적 관습들에 의해
세습 되어 자본주의 사회 속에서 또 다른 형태의 신분적 편견을 만들었다. 서양 사회 속 동양 남자에 대한
편견은 나에게는 소외감과 정체성의 혼란이라는 극단적 형태로 다가왔다. 다시 말하면 나의 소외감과 정체성 혼란은
이러한 편견과 그것에서 기인한 개인적 고민과 관련이 있다.
이러한
개인적인 고민의 연속성 속에서 나의 작품세계를 더욱 발전시키기 위한 노력의 일환으로, 동화 속 주인공들의 이야기들을 통해서 이러한 관념들을 찾아나가려고 한다. 이것은 내가 지금껏
일관되게 주장해 온 (서양사회 속 동양 남자가 가지는) ‘소외감과 편견’이 서양 문화의 어느 곳에서건, 특히 어린이들이 많이 읽고 있는 전통적인 동화 속 이야기들에서
조차 상존하고 있다는 사실을 직간접적으로 드러내는 것이기도 하다.
동화는
하나의 일정한 결론이나 생각을 독자들에게 받아들일 것을 은연중에 유도한다는 점에서 이러한 고정관념의 사회적 고착화와 연속성을 보장하는 훌륭한 도구가
되어 왔다. 즉 동화는 단순히 마음씨 착한 주인공의 출세 이야기와
권선징악의 사회적인 덕목만을 독자에게 전달하는 것이 아니라, 그 안에서 (당시의 사회와 정치적 상황을 반영하는), 특정한 관념들을 암시적으로 전달한다.
예를 들어 우리가 잘 알고 있는, 신데렐라, 잠자는 공주, 미녀와 야수 등등의 동화들을 들여다보면, 이러한 동화들 속에는 엄연한 사회적 계급이 존재하고, 약자가 강자에게 순종하고 그래야만 행복한
결과를 얻을 수 있다는 식의 은근한 메시지가 담겨 있음을 알 수 있다.
