All of Bae Joon Sung’s works continue to use the
title “The Costume of Painter.” Cloth
and costumes are an invention that not only adapts to a person’s climate but is
also a cultural code that allows others to see one another’s artistic tastes.
Clothes were also used as a means to classify the social status of an
individual. However, Bae’s “Costume of Painter” is even more inclusive and
detailed. This is because Bae not only
uses the title “Costume of Painter” for portrait paintings but also for still
object paintings. This “Costume of Painter” has two categories. One is the
usage of contemporary elements in traditional forms of painting; the other is
the meanings behind the works that Bae produces. Bae takes photographs of
modern day people and allows them to come together in the West’s traditional
painting. With the nude models in Bae’s works wearing clothes that might have
been present in the works of artists like David, Ingres, Sargent, and Alma
Tadema, we are able to explore the new meaning presented by the artist.
배준성 작품의 제목은 한결같이 '화가의 옷'이다. 옷(cloth)이나, 의복(costume)은 사람이 기후에 적응하기 위해 만든 발명품이면서도 어떤 사람의 미적 취향을 알아볼 수 있는 문화 코드이다. 또한 사회적 계층을 지시해주던 수단으로 쓰이기도 한다. 그러나 배준성이 말하는 '화가의 옷'은 더욱 포괄적이면서도 구체적이다. 그는 인물 회화뿐만 아니라 정물 회화에도 역시나 '화가의 옷'이라는 타이틀을 수여하기 때문이다. 이 '화가의 옷'은 두 가지 범주를 갖고 있다. 한가지는 고전회화의 현대적인 차용을 가리키며 또 한가지는 배준성이 제작하는 작품에 수여하는 의미체계를 뜻한다. 사진으로 찍은 동시대의 인물을 서양의 고전회화와 만나게 한다. 나체의 사진 모델은 다비드나 앵그르, 싸전트나 알마 타데마와 같은 화가들의 작품 속의 의복을 선사 받으면서 새로운 의미체계로의 여행을 하게 된다.
